A day after an Iowa football coach was gunned down by a former player, police are still looking for a motive for the crime which has shocked the state.
Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas was shot and killed in the high school weight room Wednesday morning. 24-year-old Mark Becker is charged with First Degree Murder.
Many are wondering how Becker was able to get released. Before the shooting, police documents show Becker was already facing a number of felony charges and had violent tendencies. Court records show Becker had also admitted to being a methamphetamine user. Because of his history, Becker was given a psychiatric evaluation. He left the hospital Tuesday and on Wednesday, police say he shot and killed coach Thomas.
Margaret Stout with the National Alliance on Mental Illness points out that there's a lot we still don't know about the case, but said it already indicates serious deficiencies in Iowa law.
"I do not believe Iowa has perfected the process for people who fall through the cracks, whether their primary diagnosis is substance abuse or mental health," Stout said. "We do have work to do and probably more code changes that need to be looked at in that area."
In Becker's case, police say they asked the hospital to notify them before he was released. But on Thursday, the hospital responded, saying it was never asked to notify law enforcement.
Stout says there needs to be a review of the required paper trail regarding suspects believed to be mentally ill or drug abusers, to make sure law enforcement and mental health providers are on the same page.
