It's one of the most recognized viaducts in the Quad Cities and beyond. But for years the Bix race starting line, near 5th and Brady Streets in downtown Davenport, has been an eyesore. Now, there are new efforts to give the railroad bridge a makeover.

Davenport city and business leaders gathered at the bridge Friday to celebrate the kick-off of beautification efforts and to take a look at what they've already accomplished. The structure has been cleaned up, ivy has been planted and eventually it will grow and cover up the viaduct wall. There are also new flower beds.

It's all the result of a partnership between the city and members of the business group, Davenport One, who are tired of looking at run-down railroad trestles that span over downtown Davenport.

"We have issues along the length of it, with the railroad not doing their maintenance and letting things grow over, so here, Davenport One has been clearing and cutting trees and brush," said 3rd Ward Alderman, Bill Boom.

Alderman Boom says the ivy should help prevent graffiti and by removing the brush, the hope is to clear out homeless camps and other problems as well.
