Iowa man sentenced for theft from evacuated homes

Associated Press - July 4, 2009 10:34 AM ET

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - A former Iowa City man has been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison for stealing guns from Coralville homes that had been evacuated during the 2008 floods.

Twenty-2-year-old Michael Garr was sentenced this week in U.S. District Court in Davenport after pleading guilty to possession of stolen firearms and possession of a firearm as a felon.

Garr is the third person to be sentenced in the case.

Daniel Vieth was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison in May and Benjamin Willett was sentenced last month to more than four years in prison.

The U.S. attorney's office says the three men broke into at least four Coralville homes that had been evacuated in July 2008 and stole at least 25 guns from the homes.
