It's not just the golfers who are in town for the John Deere Classic this week. A non-profit dentistry group called Christina's Smile, follows the PGA tour and has set-up shop in Rock Island this week, giving free dental care to low income kids or those without health insurance.
The patients are between the ages of 6 and 16. Local dentists and staff volunteer to do the work inside the mobile clinic, which is a trailer located at the south side of the Rock Island-Milan School District Administration Building. Appointments are arranged through the school nurse.
It's the 5th year for the event in conjunction with the JDC and the group's founder, Doctor Richard Garza, says coordinating volunteers and funds is like planning 21 weddings a year.
"Typically in a 3 day clinic, which is what we do here, we will provide $75,000 to $85,000 worth of dentistry absolutely free for the children." He added, "For me it's never about the money, it's about the smiles."
Christina's Smile was first started in 1989 out of Texas.
