There has been another officer involved shooting, the second in the last four days. This time a Rock Island County Sheriff's Deputy shoots a man who charged at him with a meat cleaver. It happened at 14611 85th Vvenue Court West in Taylor Ridge when the deputy responded to a 911 call for domestic disturbance.
Authorities say numerous deputies started to respond to the domestic call. The first deputy on the scene went to the front door first. Noone responded, but he heard some noise. so, he went and knocked on the back door. "The male resident when he came out was armed with a meat clever in his hand he came up towards the deputy. The deputy ended up giving him numerous orders to drop the weapon, drop the weapon, he refused to do so and the deputy ended up firing a shot," says Commander Rene Sandoval with the RICO Integrity Task Force.
Sandoval says the deputy fired one shot in the man's chest. That's when other deputies arrived at the scene. The investigation is being conducted by the Rock Island County Integrity Task Force, which is made of local police departments and the Illinois State Police. "When there's an office involved shooting through an agency that's a member of the rock island county integrity task force has the option of calling the task force in to actually do the officer involved shooting."
The deputy involved in the shooting did not have taser. A spokesperson for the Rock Island County Sheriff's Department says budget problems restrict how many officers can have one.
The task force is still investigating and interviewing witnesses. "We'll do a thorough, professional investigation and we'll send all reports to the state's attorney who will review them and make the final determination."
The man who was shot was in surgery for most of the afternoon. He is in stable condition and has not been charged with anything yet. The deputy was taken to the hospital as precaution, he has been released.
