The United Township School Board held a special meeting Thursday to discuss the case.

The United Township High School Board has voted to terminate employment for Social Studies teacher, Jason Van Houtte. The 37 year old teacher is accused of having sex with a minor, who was also one of his students. Van Houtte was arrested this week on three counts of Criminal Sexual Assault.

In a closed-door meeting Thursday morning, the UTHS School board discussed the matter. The superintendent announced that based on advice of legal counsel, there is enough evidence from the police investigation to recommend his employment be terminated.

"It's very, very difficult on our community," said Superintendent Dr. Jay Morrow. "Mr. Van Houtte was an excellent teacher, well liked by his students and his colleagues. This has taken a toll on our family here."

Van Houtte can request a hearing to appeal the decision. If he does, the hearing will be held on September 3rd. After that date, the superintendent says the decision to terminate stands, no matter what happens with the criminal proceedings.

Van Houtte is also the Head Football Coach at Orion High School. An assistant coach has taken over, for now. Orion school officials have scheduled a meeting to discuss the situation next week.
