WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Joe Biden today plans to announce nearly $1.2 billion in grants to help hospitals transition to electronic medical records.

Biden and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (seh-BEEL'-yuhs) will be in Chicago today. They're set to detail how that piece of the $787 billion economic stimulus plan would help Americans when they go to the hospital or their doctors.

It also is a what's-in-it-for-me way for the White House to illustrate how it is spending parts of the massive amount of taxpayer dollars.

In remarks prepared for the Chicago event, Biden says electronic health records will make health care safer and more efficient.

The grants won'tt be available until Oct. 1, when the new federal fiscal year begins.
