Scott County Tests New Election Equipment

Updated:

There's an election going on Tuesday in Iowa. Voters are choosing school board members and deciding other issues. The Scott County Auditor's Office is also using the election to try-out some new equipment.

Pollbook is a lap-top computer with election software developed in Iowa.  50 counties are giving it a try. Poll workers say it's a simple process.

"Everything is spelled out for you step by step.  It's new, but it's a really good system," according to Fae Harvey.  She was putting the system to the test at the Scott County Library in Eldridge.  Voters walk in, give their name and instead of looking it up in a registry the size of a book, the poll worker types the information into a computer.

"When they're name comes up, I just have to check their address and verify. I ask them the address and date of birth," added Harvey.

If everything is correct, a label prints off and is attached to a sheet the voter signs. If a name or address needs to be changed or the person isn't registered, it can all be done right on the spot. Harvey says the new system will save a lot of time.

"If they weren't in the book we would have to call the auditors office to see if they were registered." With 60 precincts, the phones would get backed up and voters could get stuck.

"Now we have a connection to the auditor's office. We can do it ourselves. We don't have to call the office."

It's a pilot program and right now, costs the county just $100. The Auditor expects even with more investment, it will save the county money in the long term, because it will eliminate a lot of paperwork.

Polls are open until 8:00 Tuesday night.
