Davenport Backpack Weigh-In

Updated:

While members of congress battles health care reform, there is also concern about the health of school children in Davenport, specifically when it comes to their backpacks.

Middle school students at J.B Young got a demonstration Wednesday on how to wear a backpack and how much should go in it.

Occupational Therapy students from St. Ambrose University conducted a weigh-in during science class. They say kids should not carry more than 15-percent of their own weight in their book bags, so if a child weighs 100 pounds he should carry no more than 15 pounds.

"We don't think about kids getting injured by their backpacks, but they do," says St. Ambrose Occupational Therapy Professor Dr. Christine Urish. "And if they wear them too low, they can bang on their lower backs and cause damage."

Students studying health and science at St. Ambrose visit the school on a regular basis, as a way to introduce kids to different career choices.
