New Strip Club in Davenport?

Updated:

Does Davenport need another strip club? New owners are trying to re-open the Chorus Line on Brady Street and that has some neighbors concerned.

Almost a dozen business owners packed city hall Wednesday night, telling council members they are worried about a new strip club moving in. They argued it could bring in the wrong kind of business or keep new business away altogether.

But, others say vacant buildings will not attract anyone or contribute to the city's tax base.

"It brings in tax dollars, regardless of what kind of business it is, will keep women off welfare because they have a job to go to," Kelly Smith, owner of Doctor John's Lingerie Boutique said.

She says The Chorus Line will complement her business, but city leaders say because the two are neighbors only one can be open.

The city adminstrator says city code does not allow more than one adult business on a single lot.

"After inspection of doctor johns determined that it is an adult establishment and cabaret license cannot be approved on same lot," Craig Mailin, said.

Managers at The Chorus Line say they'll appeal. They plan to meet with their attorney to talk about filing a lawsuit against the city. They say they should have been told about this code before they started the renovation process and sunk tens of thousands of dollars into this space.
