Almost fifty cities in Iowa will have to pay more money into the Municipal Fire and Police Retirement System. That's the pension plan for police and fire. The increased contributions are needed because of a 21 percent drop in investments in the last fiscal year.
The city of Davenport will have to pay an additional 626 thousand dollars next fiscal year. Mayor Bill Gluba thinks the city will come up with the money this year without having to increase taxes or reduce essential services.
Davenport will save more than a million dollars when Scott County takes over a consolidated dispatching system. Gluba says some of that savings can be used to help pay for the city's additional contribution to the state pension fund for police and firefighters.
Among other cities paying the additional expense are Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Des Moines and Sioux City.
