The Durant High School principal is preparing for her day in court after the school board voted last night to consider firing her.
School board members read 15 counts against Monica Rouse, including allegations that she falsified student records. While the school board gave only a general outline of what it says Rouse did wrong, attorneys on both sides of this case say that's all the board is required to do.
But people who call Durant home say that's not enough. "I think they could come out and say a few more things and let the people know really what's going on," says Timothy Hughes who has two sophomores at Durant High.
He says the controversy is mostly about school officials not getting along. "I think the board and the superintendent have one thing on their agenda and I think maybe part of town has another thing on the agenda of who they want to be in there."
Some students say Rouse is a good teacher and principal.
Dakota Stockwell,17, says he doesn't believe any of the allegations against his principal, especially the accusation that she changed student records. "I think that's not true at all; I can't see her doing that. I can see her helping students, but not cheating."
It might seem rare for students to be so supportive of their principal, but Durant is a close-knit community and even people with no ties to the school find the allegations hard to believe.
Ellyn Beland says, "They were saying she falsified records - I don't believe any teacher and or principal would do that."
But until more details come out, rumors will be flying around town. Hughes says, "Some of them think it's all wrong and there's a few that think she's probably guilty."
Rouse has been the principal at Durant High for eleven years. Her husband is a teacher at the school and she has two kids in the school system. The superintendent had banned her from school grounds, but after a civil suit was filed in Cedar County, she is now allowed to visit the school as a parent.
Rouse's attorney says depending on how the discovery process goes, a hearing should be held within the next 30 days.
