Demolition is expected to begin Monday on a landmark hotel in Marquette, Iowa. On Thursday, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission approved the demolition of the hotel, which is built into a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in northeastern Iowa. It also has a companion pink elephant.
Now owned by the Lady Luck Casino, officials say the 25-room hotel built in the 1960s lacks accessibility. Guests had to walk up 14 steps to get to the front office and another flight or two to get to rooms. There were no elevators or ramps.
Casino officials say they spent over $300,000 on improvements to the hotel since buying it in 2000. It's unclear whether the property, with spectacular views, will be redeveloped.
