Rock Island Teen Helps Sick Children

Updated:

A teen who has battled health problems of his own is giving back to the hospital that helped him recover.

Rock Island High School senior Kevin Johnson donated hundreds of dollars worth of toys to the pediatric unit at Trinity Hospital. The toys are for infants up to 2 years old.

Nurses say young children often have a hard time understanding why they don't feel good. Kevin says he understands that.

He has had several heart surgeries from the time he was very young.  So when he had to do a project for a scholarship, he knew exactly what he was going to do.

"I could definitely see right away where the results would lead to," said Johnson. "It was on a personal level. I knew where the toys would go and how it would help.  It just seemed like a good fit."

Kevin worked with the Rock Island High School Key Club organizing bake sales after school to raise money for the project. So far, he has raised about $1,700.
