Man Hurt In Coal Valley Dump Truck Crash

Updated:

Illinois State Police are still trying to determine why a car crossed the center line, hitting a dump truck near Coal Valley Tuesday afternoon.

Police say a Subaru Forrester driven by 60 year old Larry Schlafman of Vinton, Iowa crossed the center line on Highway 6 near Niabi Zoo Road into the path of an oncoming dump truck. The truck wound up on its side in the roadside ditch and caught fire.

Schlafman had to be cut out of his smashed vehicle by the Coal Valley Fire Department and air-lifted to a local hospital. He was later transferred to University of Iowa Hospital to be treated for head and internal injuries.

The driver of the dump truck, Gregory Schoellermann of East Moline was not hurt in the crash.
