Election Day Electronics In Scott County

Updated:

The polls opened Tuesday in Iowa for Municipal Election Day and voters at one polling place in Davenport, were greeted with a lot of electronic equipment. Scott County is using laptop computers to verify voter information and to improve efficiency and accuracy in the process.  When you stop in to vote, poll workers use the computers to verify your registration information.

Scott County Auditor Roxanna Moritz says the computers will also save the county manpower. Typically, after the election is over, county employees have to manually enter information into a state database on every person who voted. In big elections, that process can take months and county employees can rack-up a lot of hours in overtime pay.

With the laptops, it literally takes a few seconds to send that information. Poll workers say it's easy to use and voters agree.

"It made everything very simple and they ask all the pertinent questions, date of birth and correct address and made sure i was the right person for the right vote," said Davenport voter Patricia Goetsch.

Right now, there are only five electronic registration systems operating in Scott County. The Scott County Auditor hopes to eventually have them operating in all of the 63 precincts.
