Quad City Columnist Has Cancer

Updated:

"It's rather a startling, disconcerting thing to be told you have cancer," says longtime Quad-City Times writer, Bill Wundram.

It's not unusual for Wundram to write about himself in his column, but in Wednesday's paper, he shared some very personal news with readers.  He has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. His doctors want him to start radiation treatment right away.

Wundram says he's been told the longer the treatments go on, the more tired he'll get. But the soon-to-be 85-year-old newspaper man isn't planning to slow down. He's scheduling his treatments late in the day, so he won't have to miss work.

Cancer runs in Bill's family. So while he knew there was a strong family history, the diagnosis still came as a shock. But in typical Bill Wundrum style, he's not letting it get him down. He plans to write about his cancer experience to help others.

"I can't help it, I know I'll write columns about this. What's happening? How I'm feeling?  What goes on? I think, hopefully, this will help some others to allay their fears," Wundram said. "Prostate cancer is an insidious thing.  It can creep up on you and every man should constantly have check ups," he added.

Wundram says he was faithful about getting checked because of a strong family history. His father and sister both died of cancer. And his son is a colon cancer survivor.

"If you don't do anything, be pushing up daisies by summertime. That's scary so I'm gonna whip it, I'm going to whip it."

Bill Wundram has been writing for the same newspaper for 65 years.
