The Rock Island County Waste Management Agency is not accepting appliances and tire for recycling. The moratorium is only temporary.
The problem is the county is having a contractual problem with it's contractor. And there's a liability issue allowing the company to pick up appliances and tires. Usually, the program allows rock island residents to put old washers, dryers, water heaters or tires on the curb. They would call the agency, and the materials would be picked up free of charge.
Now, Rock Island County residents can take their appliances to Scott County Waste Commission. But there is a small fee. In the meantime, the county is trying to work out a deal. "We're striving very quickly to restore the program to it's full capacity. We're hoping it will be resolved by the beginning of December if at all possible," says Laura Berkley, RICO Waste Management Agency Staff Coordinator.
