Road Closed Means Road Closed

Updated:

Many behind the wheel are not driving safely on one Davenport road. Crews have been working on widening a portion of Division Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Northwest Boulevard since July, but hundreds of drivers every day do not obey the construction signs posted.

A TV6 crew Friday counted at least 20 drivers in 10 minutes breaking the law and that has many neighbors fed up.

Closed means closed. But car, after car, after car illegally goes through barricades on Division Street, entering a road closed for construction.

"It's very easy for them to drive around instead of drive through," said Laurel Bell, a nearby resident.

The road is closed to traffic for more than a mile. The problem is that barricades have to be open one lane for residents. However, residents say most of the drivers going through do not live there.

"I don't care how many hundreds of people who go through here we know pretty well who lives here and who doesn't," said Larry Patrick.

Construction is always a headache for drivers, but now some drivers are causing even bigger problems.

"People are moving the barricades that say road closed. They drive through our yard, they drive through the neighbors yard to get around the barricades," added Bell.

Construction crews say that puts more traffic on the road that should not be there and puts workers at risk trying to watch their own equipment.

"I almost got hit, which is bad for the safety guy to almost get hit," said Valley Construction Safety Manager, Winston Miller.

"These guys have ear plugs in, they can't hear and people show absolutely no respect," said resident, Chuck Carter.

Drivers disobeying the signs has become such an issue that neighbors and construction crews have gone to Davenport Police.

"There's probably like 8 or 10 people that weren't very happy the other day. They set up a little operation and they had like 8 cars pulled over with like a half an hour," added Miller.

Construction crews urge those behind the wheel to avoid that area if at all possible. The portion of the road North of 53rd Street is expected to be open in the next couple of weeks.
