The rush to get harvest in before winter went up in smoke in Eldridge, Iowa Monday morning.
Firefighters were called to put out flames shooting out of a grain dryer. The equipment was drying corn that had too much moisture for proper storage. Somehow, the dryer malfunctioned and caught on fire. Eldridge Fire Chief Tyler Schmidt says it was challenging to get at the fire to put it out.
"The problem we're running into right now is we have to unload all the corn by hand. We have to cut holes in the dryer, trying to get all the burning corn out of it," he said.
No one was hurt, but Schmidt believes the dryer was destroyed.
