WMU Students Harvest Corn

Updated:

250 students from Winfield Mount Union put away the books and get some real life experience on the farm, picking corn.  One of three service projects Superintendent Pat Coen has the students do each year, "We've got 11year olds all the way to 18 year olds working, we've got 90 year old grandfathers driving unloaders and it's great seeing everyone come together for a common effort," say Coen.

More than 50-acres of corn is left to be harvested after a fire two weeks ago and the students at Winfield Mount Union were more than willing to do the work and make some money for the district. Senior Grant Klopfenstein is excited about the project, "Each of these round buckets we fill up is like $3.50 and we says there's another one and we add it up in our heads as we go. That's what keeps me going knowing how much money we're picking up off the ground."

Superintendent Coen says they are hoping to raise 15 to 30 thousand dollars that will be split up between the classes and the rest will be put into the sports enhancement fund to help build a sports complex.  "Our school has wanted a track for a long time and this is what we needed to do to get money for what we need," said Senior Dillion Price.

Grant Klopfenstein knows the importance of giving back, "Even though I'm not going to be running on the track, it's still nice to help out the school."

At the end of the day Superintendent Coen says the students will feel a sense of accomplishment, "It doesn't matter if we get all 50-acres done, what matters is the kids came out and they feel they've accomplished something. They are smarter and wiser than they were when they came out this morning."
