GOOSE LAKE, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating the shooting of a trumpeter swan found in Clinton County.

The swan was found along Highway 136 near the Goose Lake Wildlife Area.

According to conservation officer Luke Webinger, it was initially believed the swan struck a power line. However, X-rays revealed pellets in its wing.

Webinger says the swan is being treated by a wildlife rehabilitator, but its long-term prognosis is not clear. He says at the very least, the swan will never fly again.

Webinger said the large female was hatched in Clinton County in 2000 and has been spotted flying in and around the area since.

Swans aren't game birds. The natural resources department is asking the public for assistance in finding the person responsible for the swan's injuries.
