DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A Steamboat Rock toddler has died from severe smoke inhalation after a house fire.

The Hardin County Sheriff's Office says 1-year-old John Eckheart and the other six members of his family were taken to Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

John Eckheart was then transported to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, where he passed away Thursday.

The toddler's mother, father and siblings were all treated and released. The siblings are ages 2 to 6.

Neighbors tried to pull the family from the house as members of the city's volunteer fire department arrived.

The toddler's death is the 41st related to fire in Iowa this year. About one-quarter of all fire victims in the state in 2009 have been younger than 18.
