Lights On! Rings In Winter Season

Updated:

A holiday event Saturday attracts hundreds and brings a twinkle to their eyes thanks to tens of thousands of lights. Lights On! is an annual tradition that rings in the winter season in Davenport.

Hundreds braved the chilly weather to see the sight, but kept warm enough while enjoying some cookies, hot cocoa, and carolers. At dusk, Santa Claus switched on the lights with his magic wand with the help of Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba. Thousands of twinkle lights and dozens of characters shined throughout the park.

Organizers say the light display is really a work of art that grows a little bit every year and there are some new faces behind the magic this time around.

"It's a different scene this year and we're going to continue to add to it every year so we look forward to continuing on with the tradition," said Ken Asta with the Davenport Parks and Recreation Department.

Many visitors say this is a tradition, something they can't go without each holiday season, and often come back again to see the lights.

"This is a tradition that goes back over 30 years and Fejervary Park is one of our premiere parks, and it's a great Christmas tradition," said Mayor Bill Gluba.

"It's very good. I enjoy all of it, the singing and Santa. I haven't seen Santa yet but I'm going to look for him," said Dorothy Varchman.

Santa Claus kept busy seeing all the girls and boys. A lot of lucky little ones had a chance to request something very special this year.

Organizers say the lighting display was made possible by dozens of volunteers and took almost six weeks to put together. If you want to see the lights for yourself the display will be on every night at dusk until January 1st.
