Treacherous Travel On I-80 In Iowa

Updated:

The Iowa Department of Transportation reports progress is being made to clear some roadways, despite continued high winds and limited visibility in Western and Central Iowa.

Travel is still not advised at this time in most parts of the state. Open, rural areas remain hazardous with white-out conditions and drifting snow.

- I-35 is open, but plowing has been halted between mile posts 96 and 111 because of dangerous driving conditions. Travel is not advised between Ames (mile post 111) and the Minnesota border.

- I-80 is open, except for a west bound segment near mile post 175 (Kellogg area) where a number of vehicles are blocking the roadway. Visibility is still limited in many areas and travel conditions are poor.

Earlier Wednesday, an 18 mile stretch of I-80 between Newton and Grinnell was closed to traffic because of poor visibility. At the I-80 rest stop near Bettendorf, things were unusually quiet as most travelers stayed home. Cars could be seen in the ditch, and they'll be there a while. The DOT has issued a towing ban until conditions improve.
