Plowing Side Streets

Updated:

Road conditions are rough through out the Quad Cities. Even crews in town are having trouble keeping up. The Davenport Public Works Department is working around the clock trying to clear out the snow. As crews head out to the streets, they can't go directly to residential areas. "To keep the primary routes open so the public can get around. Most of the people are within a 3 to 4 blocks of a primary route," says Lavern Cole, Superintendent of Street Collection and Maintenance.

The goal was to have these primary routes clear by Wednesday afternoon. But mother nature had a different idea. Cole adds, "The wind is blowing our primary streets shut. Some of them, making them hazardous."

Once the wind dies down, plows will start to work on side streets. Some are already done, but others aren't. Regardless, don't expect your street to look like some of the major roads. "With the residential, most of it will be packed. We won't get much of it off, but we're doing what we can," according to Cole.

The roads will be treated with salt and Cole says our cold temperatures shouldn't affect the crews or their work. "We've been treating with a product and it seems to be working," says Cole.

In addition to side streets, road crews will also be plowing downtown Davenport Wednesday night. If you would like an update on snow clearing in residential areas. There are the numbers to call for more information.
