Prosecutor to address Rockford police shooting

Associated Press - December 23, 2009 7:54 PM ET

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in northern Illinois could be close to announcing a decision on whether the shooting death of a 23-year-old black man by two white police officers inside a church-run daycare was justified.

Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato was scheduled Wednesday night to discuss the killing that highlighted the suspicion and fear between police and minority communities. His office declined to offer details about his news conference, which was delayed until 10 p.m..

The officers shot the unarmed Mark Anthony Barmore inside the Rockford daycare full of children.

Authorities say there was struggle over a police gun. But witnesses say Barmore surrendered.

After his death in August, thousands attended rallies and U.S. Department of Justice mediators were sent to ease racial unrest.
