In the days leading up to Super Bowl XLIV many sports fans are hitting the stores to stock up. Some shoppers say this year the Super Bowl means super spending.
Some people are especially worried about how they'll watch the game and will go out and buy a new TV just for Sunday. "One, if you're a fan of course you want to look at it in the best picture quality you can. Then two, it's just entertainment," said Chris Geigle, Manager at the Davenport Best Buy. Geigle says Super Bowl season is one of the busiest times of year for TV sales. Many shoppers, proving that Saturday, were looking to score a new centerpiece for their game-day gathering.
"We wanted to look at the TVs and see what was on special," said Harlan Shadt shopping with his grandson.
Besides the special deals, some shoppers are lured by the excuse to upgrade. Many say they want to experience this year's game in high-def. "I don't think it's ever been any better quality of TV you can buy on the market today so what better reason than Super Bowl time," said Tim Catton.
Of course many sports fans can't sit around the big screen without game-time snacks... "We're selling a ton of Velveeta, we're selling a ton of Rotel tomatoes, chips, pop, beer," said Davenport Hy-Vee Assistant Director Matt Egger.
Managers say those items are flying off the shelves and, by the look of some shopping carts, people are stocking up more than usual this year. Even those trying to stretch their dollar.
"You always think about it but it always seems to go out the window when you get down to the final preparations," said Mary Clarke buying food and drinks for her Super Bowl party. Clarke went for a special deal on a crock pot and cheese dip and got the rest of the essentials, so all that's left to worry about now is Colts versus Saints. "Had to get the roast beef to finalize the French dip sandwiches, so I said we're calling them 'French Quarter' dips," added Clarke.
One thing super markets use to attract customers to the game-day sections is flashy displays and samples. As far as the entertainment, Geigle says Super Bowl season is actually the second busiest time of for TV sales besides the holidays.
Kick-off for the big match-up between the Saints and Colts is set for 5:25 Sunday.
