Galesburg schools may cut 80 positions

Associated Press - March 9, 2010 8:34 PM ET

GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) - The Galesburg School Board has approved what District 205 Superintendent Gene Denisar calls its largest reduction in force in nearly 30 years.

The reduction approved by the board Monday night includes nearly 80 individuals - 20 full- and part-time teachers, nearly 60 paraprofessionals or aides, and one administrator.

Denisar blames it on what he now understands to be a proposed 14-percent cut in state education spending is to blame.

The annual reduction in force list usually comprises a lot of grant-funded positions, the people employed in which are often rehired later, but Denisar says that's not certain this time.

Denisar says District 205 is currently owed over $2.2 million in payments from the state that have yet to arrive.
