New jobs are coming to the Quad Cities area. More than 100 new workers are starting in Clinton, and there are more positions coming.
Archer Daniels Midland opened a new plastics plant. The first of its kind, the plant will create a natural, biodegradable plastic using starch from ADM's wet corn mill. The plastic, known as Mirel, will be marketed for use in things like compost bags, business equipment, and consumer products such as gift cards. Right now about 100 new, full-time workers are clocking in. That number of jobs is expected to go up as demand for the product increases. City leaders say this plant is a large economic investment, and in the long-run could create new opportunities for the region.
"We're hoping as a result of this some suppliers will want to move closer and develop the product right here," said Julie Allesee, President of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce.
The plant could be shipping bio-plastic products created by these new jobs next month. It's expected to be in full operation this summer, and at full capacity will produce about 50,000 tons per year of the plastic.
