Former Iowa workers to pay for deportation

Associated Press - March 12, 2010 9:24 AM ET

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - Immigration officials say 37 former workers at an Iowa kosher slaughterhouse who are being deported by the end of the month will have to pay their own way home.

Immigration Customs and Enforcement spokesman Greg Palmore says those being deported where told several weeks ago so they would have time to make arrangements. Palmore says if they have a hardship and can't pay their own way, immigration will consider the issue.

The 37 were among nearly 400 people arrested in an immigration raid at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville in May 2008. They must pay their own way home because they are not in immigration custody.
