Google In Galesburg

Updated:

Cities are all over the country are applying to be apart of an experiment. Now, Galesburg wants to be included in Google's test of a high speed, broad band network. The Knox County city is hoping Google will want to jump on board.

Galesburg is known for trains. Now, the city wants to be known for a different type of engine, powered by Google. "It's going to be fiber optic connections to the homes of each community they select and they're going to deliver speeds of 1 gigabite per second," says Stephen Gugliotta, Galesburg's Associate Planner.

That means the high speed network would be 100 times faster than what Americans are used to. And that could give Galesburg businesses and schools opportunities that others wouldn't have. "The ability to have ultra high speed connections would create possibilities that we can't even imagine at this point," adds Gugliotta.

Google is currently only asking interested cities for information. And asking the public how the they feel about the experiment. Galesburg has a website to promote the contest, that they hope will give the city an edge. "They're looking for very creative ways. So not only is there standard questions and answers, but it you can come up with creative ways such as you tube video you can link it to the nomination form," according to Gugliotta.

The city is having a news conference Monday morning at the Amtrak Depot. They want the entire community to attend. They're asking you to wear Google colors, blue, red, yellow and green. The event will be used as apart of a you-tube submission.

If you would like to nominate the city online, you can visit "GOOGLE IN GALESBURG." Nominations will be accepted until March 26th.
