Kewanee Hospital To Close Birthing Center

In about three months, Kewanee Hospital will close its birthing center. The hospital has lost over two million dollars on that service since 2008.

Hospital administrators say the low medicaid reimbursement rates and Illinois' failure to pay its bills on time are reasons for eventually closing the birthing center.

In the last fiscal year, seventy three percent of the women giving birth at Kewanee Hospital were public aid patients.

Now, expectant mothers in the Kewanee area will have to go several miles outside of the community to deliver. One option could be Hammond-Henry Hospital in Geneseo. That hospital is twenty five miles from Kewanee.

The Kewanee Hospital Birthing Center will close on July 31st. Twelve people could lose their jobs.
