Flood water is going down in some places, and in others, it may not go as high as first thought. The Mississippi River in the Quad Cities is now expected to crest at 17-point-6 feet, which is about a foot lower than first projected.
The river has poured over its banks and into LeClaire Park in downtown Davenport, but with the revised crest, it may stop there. The city of Davenport announced Tuesday afternoon that it was scaling back its flood-fighting preparations and would re-route some detours around River Drive.
Many rivers in the Quad City area are expected to crest around flood stage by Wednesday or Thursday, if they haven't already. The only exception would be New Boston, Illinois where the river is projected to crest several feet higher. As a result, Lock and Dam #16 in Illinois City and #17 in New Boston are expected to close sometime Tuesday.
The Rock River is also several feet above flood stage in Joslin, Illinois. It's projected to crest about a foot and a half above flood stage in Moline on Wednesday.
In Barstow, Illinois, flood water washed-out about 200 feet of an agricultural levee between Zuma Creek and the Rock River. A farm field and about a dozen homes are affected by the subsequent flood water.
