Defendant Smashes Through R.I. Co. Courthouse Doors

The doors to the Rock Island County Courthouse are damaged after a man under arrest decided to make a run for it. According to Rock Island County Sheriff Jeff Boyd, the man, Demetrius Bateman, was in the courthouse for failure to appear on a citation of driving while having a revoked license.

The sheriff says Bateman was being escorted out of the courtroom and heading for booking, when they reached the hallway and he took off. He crashed through the courthouse glass door. A sergeant and a bailiff went after him. They suffered minor injuries. Bateman was more seriously hurt and is undergoing surgery.

He now faces charges of aggravated battery, damage to state property, two counts of resisting and one count of escape.
