CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer says Arismendy Alcantara (ehr-iz-MEN'-dee al-KAHN'-truh) will continue to play regularly down the stretch. The Cubs have designated veteran second baseman Darwin Barney for assignment, meaning they have 10 days to trade, release or place him on waivers. The Cubs host San Diego again Wednesday night.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Michael Sam says he knows he must improve across the board to make the St. Louis Rams. The NFL's first openly gay player says he has dropped 13 pounds in the weeks leading up to the start of training camp in hopes of getting a little faster. The Rams already have one of the best pass rushes in the NFL, with Robert Quinn and Chris Long at the ends. Sam was a seventh-round draft pick.
