LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - Tony La Russa is getting a plaque in Cooperstown. The former St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox manager is one of three elected Monday by the Hall of Fame's expansion era committee. The others are former Cardinals player and skipper Joe Torre and ex-Atlanta manager Bobby Cox. They'll be inducted in July.
CHICAGO (AP) - The wind chill on Chicago's lakefront could be below zero when the Bears host the Dallas Cowboys Monday night. Former player and coach Mike Ditka's number 89 will be retired at halftime of a game the Bears need to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. They trail Detroit by a half-game in the NFC North.
CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) - Eastern Illinois will play Towson Friday night in the quarterfinals of the FBS playoffs. The second-seeded Panthers rolled over Tennessee State 51-10 on Saturday while seventh-seeded Towson defeated Fordham 48-28.
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Former Chicago White Sox outfielder Magglio Ordonez (MAG'-lee-oh or-DOHN'-yehz) is entering the world of politics. He's been elected mayor of a city in his native Venezuela. Ordonez retired last year after a 15-year career with the Sox and Detroit Tigers. He batted .309 with 294 career home runs.
