A Monmouth, Iowa, couple had a shocking surprise early Monday morning. They found a man in their garage with a shotgun. It happened just before 1 am in rural Monmouth. The couple heard someone ring their doorbell and when one of them went to investigate, he came face to face with a masked stranger who had a gun pointed straight at him. The man quickly closed the door as the stranger fired. The bullet knocked off the door handle.

The intruder got away and tonight neighbors say they're unsettled because the gunman is still on the loose. "For someone to just violate them that way, it just makes me sad." says friend and neighbor of the victims, Ruth Ann Scott. "It is kind of still being in that state of disbelief that this could happen. It's almost like you watched a movie or something."

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is investigating, but so far have no leads. The department is asking the public to come forward with any information.
