A dog is dead and an investigation is underway after a police shooting over the weekend in a Bettendorf neighborhood.

Bettendorf police officers were called to the 2900 block of Harmony Dr. around 2:30 Saturday, May 11, 2013. Police were responding to a report from a neighbor of two pit bulls running loose in the area.

According to the city, the dogs had no collars or tags. When the officers arrived, the homeowner who made the call, had the dogs blocked off on the back deck with deck chairs. The owner of the dogs also arrived on scene. As the owner was trying to put a harness on one of the dogs, the other one ran past her and the officer tried to block the dog's path. According to the city, the dog then jumped at the officer, snapping its teeth. The officer brushed the dog away with his arm and the dog attacked, jumping and snapping at the officer's face.

That's when the city says the officer kicked the dog away and the dog bit his shin, causing minor lacerations. The officer then fired at the dog twice.

"It's sad that it had to happen," said Bettendorf Police Captain, Keith Kimball. "We feel bad for the owner of the dog. But, at that time, the officer had to make that decision."

In a recording of police radio scanners, there's an audible scream coming from the dog's owner. Sheila Williams witnessed her dog being shot --

"I was in shock. I was just in shock. I was shaking uncontrollably," Williams said. "One of the officers grabbed me and gave me a hug and said they had to do that."

The officer was treated and released from the hospital. The dog was taken to an animal hospital, where it later died.
