Credit Card Scam In Savanna, IL

Updated:

Carroll County, Ill is currently the target of credit and debit card fraud. Over the weekend, about 100 people have reported strange charges to their bank accounts.

The majority of the reports are coming from Savanna. There are five banks within city limits and police tell KWQC's Morgan Ottier that every one of the banks has been exposed to credit or debit card fraud.

But the problem is more widespread -- with several surrounding towns in Carroll County reporting similar complaints. That includes: Mount Carroll, Milledgeville, Lanark and Thomson.

The amount of money charged on each card ranges from $20 to more than $1,000. Savanna resident Tim Schoenig reported that his debit card was hacked on Tuesday --

"At a big box store, in Ohio, and there were at least four, maybe five, transactions at the same spot," Schoenig said.

Fraudulent purchases have been made out of state, even out of the country. Savanna Police have handed the investigation over to federal law enforcement. If you notice any suspicious activity on your bank account, contact your bank immediately.
