One person is dead after a car accident on Interstate 80 this morning (January 11, 2007). It backed up traffic for hours and led police on a search for Greyhound dogs.

It happened on I-80 just west of Division Street. The driver of the truck lost control of his car veered off the road and struck a sign before finally coming to a stop about 300 feet from the highway.

The dogs in the attached trailer were all Greyhounds headed to a racetrack in Wisconsin. Four of them were killed when they ran into traffic after the accident.

The rest were rounded up by police with the help of a group called Quad Cities Greyhound Adoptions. That group is now keeping more than 20 of the dogs double-bunking them at a shelter in Maysville, Iowa.

Police are still searching for three Greyhounds still on the loose. Since they're muzzled they have to way to eat or drink so officers are asking if you see one to call police immediately.
