There's a new way to treat cancer that doesn't involve surgery or chemotherapy, and now it's available in the Quad Cities.
Trinity Regional Health System now offers an Image-Guided Radiation Therapy system or I-G-R-T. It lets doctors scan patients and zero-in on cancerous tumors that can sometimes move in a patient's body.
The machine rotates 200 degrees and gives therapists, in another room, a 3-D picture so that only the tumor is zapped. Trinity Physicist, Jim Sample says, "It's extremely important to hit just the tumor, healthy tissue has side effects if radiated, we want to minimize those, and want to hone-in on the tumor itself."
The I-G-R-T is most beneficial for cancers in the prostate, pelvis, head and neck.
Right now, there are also machines located in Iowa City and Peoria.
