Crews are removing hazardous household items following last year's devastating flood in Henderson County, Illinois. On Wednesday, they were working along Lake Stevenson, not far from Gulfport.
Flooding wiped out homes. Some homes were knocked off their foundations. Workers took inventory of all the items removed from homes. Most of the items will be taken and disposed at a section of the Des Moines County Landfill in Iowa.
Workers wore masks because of the black mold inside the homes. FEMA pays for seventy five percent of the cleanup cost. Henderson County pays the remaining twenty five percent.
In Gulfport, a few people have returned to that community and plan to rebuild.
Some bar owners are also rebuilding. Gulfport was also hit hard when the Mississippi River flooded last year.
