First year students at St. Ambrose University are fanning out over Quad City neighborhoods to do some community service. Every year, incoming freshmen are encouraged to take what's called the "Urban Plunge". We caught up with a group of students sprucing-up the grounds at the United Neighbors social service agency in Davenport. They were power-washing the siding and trimming bushes on the site.
Bill Campbell with the SAU music department was supervising the work. He says the idea is to help students become acquainted with giving back and getting to know the community.
"Getting to know the community is a big part of it. Some are from a fair distance away. They don't really know the area, so this is a chance for them to get out and help out immediately, really on their first day," Campbell said.
Joe Mordell is a first year student from the Chicago suburb of Wheaton, Illinois and agrees that it's helping him get to know the area. He says he's glad the university encourages students to get involved.
"We'll it's not mandatory, but if you don't, you have to write a paper. So, pretty much everybody does it. But I like it a lot so far," Mordell added.
Mordell says he's made several new friends, as well. About 20 groups of first-year St. Ambrose University students were out working on Monday. Classes begin on Wednesday.
