CLINTON, IA -- Friends and family members tell us Benjamin Roseland was heading to the Clinton Hy-Vee for a bite to eat after hanging out at a friend's house when he disappeared into thin air. They combed the south side of Clinton today near where he was last seen hoping to find some answers.
"He just like fell off the face of the earth. It's very scary," says his mother, Theresa Roseland. "No clues, no activity on his cell phone, no activity on his bank accounts, none of his friends, nobody can find him."
Family and friends saying that's just not like him.
"He'd always call mom, would always go to work, would always work overtime," Theresa Roseland says.
"It's been horrible worrying, not knowing where he's at, what's going on," says Ben's aunt Ann Reyes.
So volunteers and police set out to find him. Family, friends, even complete strangers looking high and low for anything that might tell them where he is.
"Thursday we just started talking about it and kind of threw it together last minute and now everybody's turned out which is great," says his coworker Marcy Balk.
His aunt Trina Hamm telling us, "You're not getting any answers to your questions, you have to start somewhere and now was a better a time than any."
An hour into the search, those relatives discovered the first sign of Ben in nearly a month. Police found two shoes a block apart on 13 Ave. So., Theresa Roseland telling police they belong to her son.
"I'm just really afraid for him," she says.
While those shoes are a start, the search is far from over.
Ryan Wiersema works as a security officer for ADM, which owns some of the land and buildings near where Ben was last seen.
"We're gonna double check all the properties that we own down in South Clinton along with some warehouses and the dike that runs along the property," he says.
His grandmother is keeping the faith.
"I believe that we'll find him alright. Maybe he's somewhere that he doesn't want to be found, I don't know," Jean Roseland says.
Police called in a canine unit, a MedForce helicopter, and several other emergency response units to search the area. So far, they tell us they haven't found anything other than those shoes.
His friends and family tell us they'll form another search party next week if he isn't found by then. Anyone with any information into his disappearance is urged to call the Clinton Police Department at (563) 243-1455.
