The Cover Boy

MUSCATINE, Ill. (KWQC) — He is an American legend. His work graced the cover of the Saturday Evening Post for decades.

Norman Rockwell takes us on a sentimental journey at The Muscatine Art Center. The exhibit is titled Norman Rockwell’s Home for the Holidays. There are forty Post covers, bringing together images of an American Christmas.

Santa Claus is featured on many of the covers. Rockwell was twenty two years old when he started Illustrating for the magazine. The exhibit features Rockwell’s brilliant work from
1916-1961.

Melanie Alexander is the art center director. She says they worked for about eighteen months In advance to be able to host the exhibit.

The facial expressions of Rockwell’s characters transcend time. Several of his subjects were friends, neighbors, and co-workers whom he included in his covers.

He also used props. In one photo, two books were placed on the floor for a little boy to create a pose that Rockwell featured in one of his paintings.

The exhibit runs through January 28, 2018. Festive and colorful. Home for the Holidays. That’s the way Norman Rockwell liked it.
