MADISON, Wis. (KCRG-TV9) -- Alliant Energy says they have gotten a number of customer calls reporting scam phone calls.

From January 2016 to November 2017 they said they got about 53 people a month reporting scam activity.

Since December 1 Alliant Energy says they have gotten 416 scam calls, 265 of which were from Iowa.

They said about 75 percent of the complaints came from business customers.

They said the scammers usually call, claim they're Alliant Energy, and threaten to disconnect utility service if the customer doesn't immediately buy a prepaid credit card to make a payment.

Alliant Energy says they don't request immediate payments or prepaid credit cards. They also said they don't threaten to end service via text message.

If you believe the call may be legitimate or want to check your account status, call Alliant Energy at 1-800-ALLIANT.

If you receive a call, contact local law enforcement.
