One person killed in accident at Bettendorf waste disposal company - UPDATE

BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) - UPDATE: The City of Bettendorf released the following statement about the fatal accident that happened Monday evening at Republic Services.

"On Monday, December 11 at 5:16 p.m., the Bettendorf Fire Department, the Bettendorf Police Department, and Medic EMS responded to Republic Services, 6449 Valley Drive, Bettendorf for an industrial accident involving a mechanic working on the hydraulics of a sanitation truck. Upon arrival, life saving measures were attempted, however the victim died at the scene due to the injuries he sustained. The victim was a 40-year-old male from Bettendorf and was an employee of Republic Services."

The name of the victim will not be released at this time pending notifications to the family members and close friends.

UPDATE: KWQC reached out to Iowa OSHA and they tell us they are aware of the fatality at Republic Services and have initiated an inspection. Iowa OSHA Administrator Jens J. Nissen says he searched Republic and did not found any previous activity for that employer.

UPDATE: A Republic Services employee was killed in Monday evening's accident. The company released a statement:

"It is with great sadness for the entire Republic Services family that we learned last night that one of our employees did not make it home safely to his family. We are mourning the loss of a good friend and coworker, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones. Republic is fully cooperating with the Bettendorf Police Department, and at this time, any additional media inquiries should be directed to local authorities."

PREVIOUS UPDATE: A city of Bettendorf spokesperson could confirm it was a work-related accident. We reached out to the company and no other details are being released at this time. Additional information should be released Tuesday morning.

ORIGINAL STORY: TV6 Crews are monitoring a situation at a waste disposal business where emergency crews are located.

A call for emergency crews went out shorty before 5:30 to an address on Valley Drive.
