BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) - Police say they've cracked an out-of-state theft ring in the Quad Cities.

According to police reports, two people from Florida are accused of cashing stolen checks at several Ascentra Credit Union locations in Bettendorf and Davenport on April 17 and 18th, 2017.

Police say a woman showed an Iowa driver's license and a debit card and wrote checks for cash four times in a 24 hour period, amounting to more than $6,000. As it turns out, the checks and IDs were in the name of two women, who reported their purses had been stolen in Davenport on April, 15, 2017.

When the thieves tried to cash another check, a security alert declined the transaction. Police apprehended the suspects and say checks reported stolen from Waukee, Iowa and Memphis, Tenn. fell from the vehicle as one of them tried to run away.

Marcus Felder and Elizabeth Shammel of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. are charged with several counts of forgery, theft and conspiracy.
