Bill introduced to legalize recreational use of marijuana in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KWQC) - Several states have approved it, will Illinois be next to allow recreational use of marijuana? A new bill being introduced in the Illinois House would legalize the drug.

Chicago Democrat Heather Steans says it's time to allow its use.

"Prohibition just plain doesn't work with marijuana, 100 million people in throughout the United States admit to using marijuana. Right here in Illinois it's about 750,000. Yet, 97 percent of those folks are buying this off of an unregulated market that criminals are controlling," said Steans.

In its current form, the bill would allow people to have less than 28 grams of marijuana, under the same structure the state's medical marijuana program currently uses.

Lawmakers sponsoring the bill say it will provide safe products, which are taxed and licensed to consumers, while also providing $350 to $700 million in revenue.

House and Senate committees will learn more about the bill next week in a joint hearing on April 19th.
