Woman charged in fatal Galesburg hit-and-run-UPDATED

GALESBURG, Ill, (KWQC) - UPDATE 5/19/17: Police say charges have been filed against the woman they say hit and killed a child Thursday afternoon, May 18.

Just before 2 p.m., Galesburg Police were called to the scene of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in front of 1070 W. South Street. When they got there, officers found that 2-year-old Ki'ale Watkins had been struck by a vehicle and was being transported to Galesburg Cottage Hospital by ambulance.

A witness told officers on scene that he heard a loud noise and in looking saw a small child laying in the street and a red SUV leaving the area. As officers were attempting to locate this vehicle, a call was made to the Galesburg Police Department in which a female caller advised that she wished to turn herself in to police for striking the child with her vehicle.

Officers went to 346 S. Henderson Street and arrested 60-year-old Rosie Lee Oden. She was charged with unsafe backing on roadway, failure to report accident involving death, failure to give information/render aid, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and no valid driver's license.

According to police, it happened the afternoon of Thurs., May 18, 2017 in the 1,000 block of W. South St.

Police say the child was in a common area between apartments and was hit and killed by a car.

Police say a suspect is in custody, but has not been charged.
